New music, video and dance from Dublin and Bucharest

Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin 8 June 2013, 8.00pm

Pre-concert talk, Contemporary Music Centre, Fishamble Street, Temple Bar 6.30pm

An international, inter-media collaboration featuring six new music-video-dance works by three Irish and three Romanian composers integrating acoustic music, live electronic music, interactive video and dance. Dublin Sound Lab has invited Romanian composers and musicians to join in a collaborative programme featuring four newly commissioned works (by Fergal Dowling, Jonathan Nangle, Piaras Hoban and Sabina Ulubeanu), a newly created theatrically inspired mixed-media piece, “Ani-motions”, by Diana Rotaru and Catalin Cretu’s stunning interactive dance and video work, “Inner Dust”. In performances with Ana Chifu (flute), Maria Chifu (bassoon), Michael Quinn (harpsichord), renowned contemporary dancer Philip Connaughton, and live video projections, music will be projected over a multi-channel surround-sound system in the Main Space at Smock Alley Theatre.

Dublin Sound Lab is a music group specialising in contemporary electroacoustic music and computer-mediated performance. Formed in 2008 by organist Michael Quinn and composer Fergal Dowling the group have premiered more than forty works by Irish and international composers. Dublin Sound Lab has performed in Paris and Bucharest and collaborated with renowned viola player Garth Knox and leading Austrian composer Karlheinz Essl.

Friends of the Earth are delighted to be hosting an event on Fracking on Monday the 11th of March with Canadian scientist Jessica Ernst.

The event will take place at 6.30pm in the Smock Alley Theatre, on Exchange St, Dublin 2. You can book you place for this free event here. We are delighted to be co-hosting this talk with No Fracking Dublin and Afri. Jessica, a 55-year-old Canadian scientist with 30 years oil and gas industry experience, is suing the Alberta government and gas producer EnCana for unlawful activities related to hydraulic fracturing. She is in Ireland on a speaking tour that includes visits to areas that will be potentially affected by fracking in the North and West of the country.

Jessica’s presentation is a thorough and shocking story of regulators failure to protect health and the environment. Her lawsuit methodically details how Alberta’s two key groundwater regulators, Alberta Environment and the ERCB, “failed to follow the investigation and enforcement processes that they had established and publicised.”

A relevant story for those of us who want to prevent fracking in Ireland.

As the #collab13 poster boy, Harry will be on the T-shirts, in the programme, and on the website. But he is SO much more than just a pretty face: Harry will also be travelling around Dublin asking people what their hedgehog is, and drumming up support for the Festival. He’ll be offering words of encouragement and wisdom to those that need it, and he’ll be asking you your thoughts about the festival, and the shows you see.
